Gum Depigmentation

Gum depigmentation, or gum bleaching, is a cosmetic dental procedure to lighten dark spots or patches on gums caused by excess melanin, giving them a uniform pink appearance, often done with lasers or scalpels to remove pigmented cells, and is popular for improving smile aesthetics, though it requires healthy gums and avoiding smoking for best results.

What It Is

Cosmetic Treatment: A procedure to eliminate dark spots (hyperpigmentation) on gums, making them pinker and more uniform.
Cause of Dark Gums: Often due to high melanin, but also certain medications or smoking (smoker’s melanosis).

Methods

Laser Gum Bleaching: Uses a dental laser to vaporize the top layer of gum tissue and destroy melanin-producing cells, with the new tissue growing pink.
Surgical/Scalpel: A dentist uses a surgical blade to remove the pigmented tissue.
Microdermabrasion: A gel is applied, and the pigmented cells are buffed away.
